Noun

The Noun is a word which is used as the name of a person, place or thing.

and the word thing incorporates:

  1. the objects that we can touch, taste, see, smell or hear.
  2. Anything that we can think of but can not perceive through our senses.

Noun has their five different kinds.

  1. Common Noun : Name of the person or thing of the same kind. Examples : Chair, sea, city, bucket, notebook etc.
  2. Collective Noun : It denotes the group or collection of persons or things. Examples : Family, team, crowd, class etc.
  3. Proper Noun : It denotes a particular person, place or thing. Examples : Anne, Tom, Asia, Chennai, Gita etc.
  4. Abstract Noun : It depicts state, quality or action. Examples : Love, brotherhood, honesty, truth etc.
  5. Material Noun : It denotes the things made of matter or substance. Examples : Necklace, watch, diamond, gold etc.

 

Noun has different behaviour like some nouns are used generally in plural form, some looks like plural but are used as singular, some looks singular in form but are used as plural, some nouns are used in the singular form only, some nouns have different meaning in their different singular/plural form.

  • Please give me a scissor. (Incorrect)
  • Please give me a pair of scissor. (correct) 

Explanation: Here, the noun (scissor) should be used in plural form.

  • Mathematics are his favourite subject. (Incorrect)
  • Mathematics is his favourite subject. (Correct)

Explanation: Mathematics looks like plural but are used in singular form.

  • Peoples should be loyal to their nation. (Incorrect)
  • People should be loyal to their nation. (Correct)

Explanation: The noun people is singular in form but are used in plural form.

  • The sceneries of the Mountains are excellent. (Incorrect)
  • The scenery of the Mountains is excellent. (Correct)

Explanation: The noun scenery is used in singular form.

  • A series of lectures were delivered in the class. (Incorrect)

Explanation: Series has the same form in singular and plural.
