A Verb is a word used to tell or assert something about some person or thing.

The verb may tell us :

What a person or thing does: as

Noah swims.

What is done to a person or thing: as

Jack is punished.

What a person or thing is: as

The dog is dead.

 

AGREEMENT OF THE VERB WITH THE SUBJECT:

'Verb-Subject' agreement plays a very important role in English Grammar. Even those who enjoy a good command over the language. Sometimes commit mistakes. In the following discussion, we have given some rules that teach the verb-subject agreement.

Rule 1 : If two or more singular nouns are joined by and, the verb used will be plural.

Examples :

  1. She and I were going to the market.
  2. Sneha and Sarah are friends.

 

Rule 2 : If two suingular nouns joined by and point out to the same thing or person, the verb used must be singular.

Examples :

  1. Rice and curry is the favourite food of the Punjabis.
  2. The collector and district magistrate is away.

 

Rule 3 : In case two subjects are joined by as well as, the verb agrees with the first subject.

Examples :

  1. Kanta as well as her children is playing.
  2. The children as well as their mother are playing.

 

Rule 4 : Neither, either, every, each, everyone and many a are followed by a singular verb.

Examples : 

  1. Either of the plans is to be adopted.
  2. Every student is expected to be obedient.
