We have studied about the Verb and four rules of the 'Verb-Subject' agreement in part I of the Verb quiz.
Here, we'll study further rules of 'Verb-Subject' agreement.
Rule 5 : If two subjects are joined by either.....or, neither....nor, the verb agrees with the subject near to it.
Example :
Either my brother or I am to do this work.
Neither he nor they are prepared to do this work.
Rule 6 : A noun singular in form and collective in sense takes a singular verb.
Examples :
The committee is unanimous in its opinion.
The council has chosen its president.
Note: Normally, when there is oneness in action, the verb is singular, but when there is diversity and every member of the collective noun has to be mentioned, the verb used is plural.
Examples :
The jury were divided in their opinion.
The crew were taken prisoners.
Rule 7 : A great many is always followed by a plural noun and a plural verb.
Examples :
A great many students have been declared successful.
A great many men have come.
Rule 8 : Similarly, if two subjects are joined by with, together with, no less than, in addition to, and no, etc., the verb agrees with the first subject.
Examples:
The boy with his parents has arrived.
He no less than I is to blame.
Further rules will be covered in the next Quiz.
